CakePHP 5 upgrade and more

BEdita 5.0.0 codename "salix" was released on 31st of august 2022.

The lastest stable version 5.36.5 has been released on 23rd of January 2025.

You can take a look at all the Releases on BEdita Github, to be up to date with BEdita API and Core updates.

This year, 2025, our main goal is to better the platform and provide more features by upgrading the CakePHP engine to version 5: BEdita version 6 is coming soon.

All 3.6.0 instances should be upgraded to this last stable version. For this version a lot of work has been done under the hood so you wouldn't see many cosmetic changes.

The 3.6 series replaces 3.5 introducing a bunch of new features, solving security issues and bugs. All users are encouraged to upgrade to this last stable version.

introduced support for RESTful API in frontend app. Now you can setup your frontend to respond as a REST API server in no time.
frontends use “hreflang” attribute in <link> HTML header tag to mark available translations and use different urls for content translations
introduced a powerful dynamic callbacks system #470
improved the shell script (./cake.sh data help) to export/import complex data following a data transfer serialized format (json and xml supported). UI to port export/import functionality in backend is work in progress. Some parts are already released but are to consider as an alpha and incomplete version.

We released today the new stable version of BEdita 3.5.1 corylus*.

This is the first bugfix release of 3.5 series . Due to fixes some security issues all users are using 3.5.0 should upgrade to this last stable version.

Here's a brief list of main changes:

security: improved protection against XSS and CSRF attacks (#591, #597)
when a new user is created a Card is automatically associated to him
in frontends if a file named home_page.tpl exists in views/pages/ it will be used as home page template
introduced a first version of data structure for export/import data in BEdita (early preview available by shell for now)

BEdita 3.3 codename "corylus" released

We released today the new stable version of BEdita 3.3 corylus*.

This new 3.3 series fixes many bugs and introduces new features and improvements, mainly on the backend side.

Here's a brief list of the most notable changes:

a new tab named filters was introduced in every module objects list. This tab contains many common filters to easily find the objects you're looking for, like filters on structure tree (children or descendants), “categories”, full text and substring searches, languages. The selected filter is handled in user session: browsing modules, filter options maintain their status if set
the Admin module gains a settings page to configure semantic relations between objects. The relations also support properties that are exposed in 'Relation' tab, inside object detail view
object's permissions can be also set in user group view
in Multimedia Module it is now possible to mark interactive areas of an image, and relate it with other objects in BEdita. Every link is highly configurable in order to behave differently (this data are not yet available in specific frontend methods, developers are required to build their own)
a new permssion was introduced to mark backend objects as private
added open graph meta tags generation in frontend

BEdita 3.2.1 codename "popolus" released

3.2.1 (code name populus*) is now officially available under GNU LGPL.

This is the first bugfix release of the 3.2 series which introduces also some improvements.

Here's a brief list of the most notable changes:

Security bugfix: disable upload of script files as PHP, Python, Javascript, etc..
Bug fix of malfunctionts deriving from mixing readonly and read-write permissions of groups on modules
Users Module: in group view a list of protected objects is showed
Improve RestClientModel in order to accept custom request options
Thumbnail creation also of remote images behind a proxy
Admin view of log files was improved

BEdita 3.2 codename "popolus" released

3.2 (code name populus*) is now officially available under GNU LGPL.

We release today the first official stable version of BEdita 3.2 Populus.

This is the first release of the new 3.2 series which introduces many new features and improvements, both on User Interface and the undergoing engine.

Here's a brief list of the most notable changes:

BEdita now is released under a single open source licence, GNU Lesser General Public License;
a new wizard installer that eventually simplifies first install and configuration;
the Admin module now features a configuration utility for the most used BEdita configuration directives;
also featuring a new User module to manage users and groups (the new default group "manager" has been added);
default editor TinyMCE has been substituted with CKEditor 4.
Publication module has been revisited;
User interface has new elements, and the dashboard has a new design;
routing rules in frontend applications have been improved;
all editable configuration parameters are joined in one single file (bedita.cfg.php);
many new features for frontend developer, i.e. a new thumbnail generator library.
Underlying MVC framework CakePHP was updated from 1.2 to 1.3;
Smarty template engine in BEdita Populus has been updated to 3.1.x series.

BEdita is now available on a github public repository.
We decided to use github for various reasons. Github makes it much easier to collaborate from different locations, with different environments (windows, linux, apple), giving to the project a new visibility. The developers have the possibility to choose between subversion and git as versioning system.
The webbased repository enhance team collaboration approch. Github offers an integrated ticketing system, useful to track development history, and much more.
We could manage to migrate from trac+svn to github, so that we didn't loose any data or metadata and we can share history information about project, open to whoever likes to contribute; this way we obtain a new space for BEdita, with new features to enhance the project growing. Github seems to be a really good place to find new contributors for BEdita.

BEdita 3.1.7 codename "ulmus" and BEdita 3.2 beta 2 codename "popolus" released

Today we are glad to announce the release of the seventh bugfix version of BEdita 3.1 and the second beta of the unstable version of BEdita 3.2.

BEdita 3.1.7 (code name ulmus*) continues its work on bugfixes and introduces some little improvements.
The most important changes are:

Admin module bugfix - overload user data loading group details
modules: fix error 500 on "deleteSelected"
use nicknames in backend view URLs
categories: alphabetic order in object list view
dummy.example.com - added form for password recovery
introduced the possibility to extend BuildFilter
managed the removal of users which have created at least an object

BEdita 3.2 beta 2 (code name populus**): populus grows and its pollen is spreading in the air! The UI gains the spanish translation and a simple, but ready to use, mobile frontend was added. Again many improvements and features have been introduced. Some are:

added UI spanish translation
admin module: introduced the way to enable/disable addons
admin module: impemented some utility functions as 'update stream fields', 'rebuild index', 'cleanup cache', 'empty logs', 'clear media cache'
introduced a simple mobile frontend (mobile.example.com)
many improvements on import/export filter
localization: add support for plugin locales in .po files
concurrent access: remove update from viewObject to avoid fake concurrent alerts

Note that this will be the last version of BEdita 3.2 under the AGPL license. From the next release the LGPL license will be applied, see "License change: from AGPL to LGPL" for more info.

License change: from AGPL to LGPL

BEdita core team decided for a license change.

The next major release of BEdita - 3.2 codename populus - will be released with a new license.

LGPL v3, GNU Lesser General Public License, has been selected for BEdita.

This will give more freedom to our users and present a clearer license scheme.

This means:

you can build proprietary or free software solutions using BEdita, with no restrictions
the only copyleft restrictions are on BEdita itself: i.e. if you modify BEdita core and distribute a proprietary software built with it, you have to publish those modifications (and only those) with a LGPL license

Today we release a new online resource dedicated to BEdita documentation: docs.bedita.com

Here we are collecting many technical articles, it will be the official technical documentation reference.

It's still a beta, many features are missing, but we are working on them.

Suggestions and feedback are highly appreciated: you may use the newly created BEdita google group to let us know what you think.

BEdita 3.1.6 stable codename "ulmus" released

Because of some issues with Firefox 11 and TinyMCE 3.3 used in BEdita 3.1.5 we have upgraded TinyMCE to 3.4.9 and we announce today BEdita 3.1.6 stable*.

The issue was reported on the new BEdita support at https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!topic/bedita/MQ0M3jnODEc

We highly reccomend to upgrade BEdita to 3.1.6 version as soon as possible.

This is the sixth bugfix release for BEdita 3.1 “Ulmus”*.
Changes include:

upgrade to tinyMCE 3.4.9 due to issues with Firefox 11 and multinstance of tinyMCE
other minor bugfix

BEdita 3.1.5 codename "ulmus" and BEdita 3.2 beta codename "popolus" released

We released today the fifth bugfix version of BEdita 3.1 and a preview and unstable version of BEdita 3.2.

BEdita 3.1.5 (code name ulmus*) introduces a new method to define inverse semantic relations between objects and solves many bugs.
The most important changes are:

handle "inverse" relations in objects save and view
now gallery too have categories
solved a bug about categories and tags, still visible in frontends when 'off'
new dummy (example) HTML5 frontend based on H5BP (http://html5boilerplate.com)
fixed an annoying bug on searches returning wrongly ordered results

BEdita 3.2 beta (code name populus**): working hard on the next release, many improvements and features have been introduced. Some are:

the Admin module contains now a mail configuration utility, a visual interface for mail configuration directives in BEdita;
the Admin module features a view of mail logs;
the Admin module presents logs for backend and frontend;
the Admin module has a view where administrators may toggle on/off all core modules;
the Publication module provides a new basic XML export/import utility;
the Publication module has now a tool to hide sections that shouldn't be in the frontend menu and handle canonical paths;
new rich text editor: CKEditor (substitutes tinyMCE that has been removed)
in Multimedia module existing file/url are correctly managed
improved PostgreSQL support (now text searches work properly)

A Christmas present!
We released today a preview and unstable version of BEdita:

3.2 alpha (code name populus*) is now offically available.

This is the first development release of the new 3.2 series and it introduces many new features and improvements, regarding both the User Interface and the undergoing engine.

Here's a brief list of the most notable changes:

a new wizard installer that eventually simplifies the install and configuration of a new BEdita instance;
the Admin module contains now a configuration utility that permits a visual edit of the most used BEdita configuration directives;
this version features a new User module to manage users and groups (also the new default group "manager" has been added)
Publication module has been revisited, all ajax behaviors were removed in order to make it similar to other modules;
navigation interface has been revisited;
routing rules in frontend applications have been improved;
all editable configuration parameters have been joined in one cfg file (bedita.cfg.php)
CakePHP was updated to version 1.3.x
Smarty template engine was updated to 3.1.x series

We proudly announce today BEdita 3.1.4 stable*.

This is the fourth bugfix release for BEdita 3.1 “Ulmus”*. This should be the last release for the 3.1 series. Soon the firts alpha release of 3.2 populus will be available.

geotag tab: for every object now you can specify zoom level and map type, retrieve automatically latitude/longitude from a common address and have a preview of the element in google maps;
fixes to category/search filter in backend that were not persistent;
in frontends: correct handling of canonicalPath of objects, improved object cache to avoid duplicate objects load, fixed language automatic detection with conflicting configuration parameters

BEdita 3.1.3 stable codename "ulmus" released

We proudly announce today BEdita 3.1.3 stable*.

This is the third bugfix release for BEdita 3.1 “Ulmus”*.
Fixes include:

in geotag tab, a new button simplifies geocoding, latitude and longitude will be automagically retrieved from a common address. You can also test it on google maps;
frontend apps gain GeoRSS (simple and atom) and KML support, respectively available with custom url addresses like /georss/section-nickname and /kml/section-nickname;
scripts tag are stripped from comments and objects when saving so to avoid xss attacks;
simple object cache array so to avoid duplication of object loads in frontend apps;
XML::toArray patch proposed and accepted by CakePHP team http://cakephp.lighthouseapp.com/projects/42648/tickets/1667;
Soap and Postgres support was improved;
many minor improvements and bug fixes in BeFront helper;

BEdita 3.1.1 stable codename "ulmus" released

We would proudly announce that today BEdita 3.1.1 (second stable relase for codename “Ulmus”*) is being released officially.

The release of BEdita 3.1.1 is the first bugfix release for BEdita 3.1 “Ulmus”. Noteworthy fixes amongst others are:

javascript fixes in concurrent users view;
several newsletter related fixes and tinyMCE integration improvements;
notification system fixes, it is now available for every object type;
translations have been updated, German translation was added (thanks to Nils-Christoph Fiedler!);
"create new object" button was added in publications module.

BEdita 3.1 stable codename "Ulmus" released

We would proudly announce that today BEdita 3.1 (code name “Ulmus”*) is being released officially.

The release of BEdita 3.1 follows three years of hard work, efforts and research: this release introduces many improvements, regarding both User Interface and the undergoing engine, and all known issues have been addressed. Noteworthy features amongst others:

content versioning;
auto–save mode of drafts;
concurrent access to managed content is signalled and managed;
new and improved front end examples, now featuring also the 2010 WordPress default theme "Twenty Ten";

Announcing the public release of 3.1 RC codename "ulmus"

August 20, 2010 – Bologna (Italy)

ChannelWeb Srl and Chia Lab Srl today announce the general public availability of BEdita 3.1 RC code name “ulmus” (*).

In this Release Candidate we focused on bug fixes and system settings/configurations. A new frontend app example inspired by the 2010 default WordPress theme TewntyTen was added.

About this RC release:

pagination in Publications section;
newsletter module adds in list invoice newsletter already sent. An invoice detail was added featured paginated mail jobs.
first active section of the publication is by default the frontend home page
a BeFrontHelper::menu() method to build simple innested unordered list menu from tree was added
improved PostgreSQL support
introduced javascript validation
it fixes known bugs.

BEdita 3.1 beta publicly available

One step more towards BEdita 3.1 “ulmus” (*)!
ChannelWeb Srl and Chia Lab Srl today announce the general public availability of BEdita 3.1 beta.

In general BEdita 3.1 introduces many new features, like content versioning, concurrent editing, autosave and more.

BEdita modules may now exist as CakePHP plugins, that are managed in the Admin module. A "sample plugin module" is bundled in downloadable package: once installed go to the Admin module to (de)activate it.

About this beta release:

alerts on change of unsaved content;
more bulk operations on object lists like copy/move to categories or sections;
new custom properties on "users";
configurable password validation rule via regular expressions;
introduces support for RDBMS other than MySQL (SQLite and PostgreSQL);
changes were made to database schema in order to avoid special words and keywords;
